Celebrations to commemmorate the 400th anniversary of the voyage of the first fleet to Jamestown Virginia in 1606 took place in Old Heathfield during the week of 17th - 24th June 2006

A special service of commemoration took place in the church where Robert Hunt was vicar before his departure as chaplain to the Virginia Expedition

A party of visitors from the USA stayed in the village of Old Heathfield East Sussex, in the homes of residents.

Visitors enjoyed a programme of day trips to some of the most beautiful and fascinating palaces, castles, cathedrals, cities and gardens in England including Windsor Castle and Canterbury Cathedral.

Visitors enjoyed the local food and drink of Sussex in some of the very best Inns, pubs and restaurants in the area.

 


ITINERARY

Saturday 17th June
Arrived Heathrow airport, greeted by UK hosts. Travelled by coach to the village of Old Heathfield, East Sussex. In the afternoon guests were introduced to other hosts and neighbours in Old Heathfield, and undertook a short guided tour of village. Dinner in a historic pub in nearby village of Mayfield.


Sunday 18th June
The Commemorative Service will be held in All Saints Church, followed by lunch in the Star Inn. Afternoon excursions include visits to Sissinghurst Gardens home of Vita Sackville-West and/or Batemans, home of Rudyard Kipling. Dinner in a nearby village.


Monday 19th June
Trip to Windsor Castle. After visiting Henley-on-Thames, site of the famous regatta, for lunch, vistors had a private tour of Windsor Castle, home of Her Majesty the Queen. Took the opportunity to attend a service in St George's Chapel.


Tuesday 20th June
Visit to Canterbury Cathedral, home of the world-wide Anglican church. Followed by an exploration of the old city of Canterbury. Returned to Old Heathfield via some of the historic villages of Kent, from where many of the crew of the first Jamestown fleet originated. Tea in the country market town of Tenterden and dinner in a nearby village to Old Heathfield.


Wednesday 21st June
After an early breakfast we visited Hever Castle, home of Anne Boleyn, second wife of King Henry VIII and mother of Queen Elizabeth 1. Here we will had a private, escorted tour of the castle with an opportunity to see the magnificent gardens and lunch at the Pavilion Restaurant.
In the afternoon we had a tour of Chartwell House, home of Sir Winston Churchill. 
Dinner at the Griffin Inn in the village of Fletching.


Thursday 22nd June
We visited Hampton Court palace, one of the favourite palaces owned by King Henry VIII. After lunch we will took a boat trip on the River Thames to Richmond, where we were met by our coach. Supper in our local pub, the Star Inn


Friday 23rd June
Visit to Brighton, one of the best known towns in Sussex, famous for its pier, and The Royal Pavilion, built by John Nash 1815-1823 for the Prince of Wales, later crowned King George IV. A 'fish and chip' lunch was followed by a visit to the picturesque villages of Alfriston and Berwick, made famous by Virginia Woolf and the Bloomsbury set. A 'Farewell Dinner' was held at a private home here in Old Heathfield.

Saturday 24th June
The coach returned to Heathrow airport.
